How We Score Plastic Swaps
The Avoid Plastic Score measures one simple question:
"Is this actually a good, practical replacement for your everyday routine?"
We Do Not Automatically Praise "Eco" Products
Most sustainability websites blindly praise anything labeled 'biodegradable', 'zero-waste', or 'bamboo'. We disagree. If a replacement is flimsy, costs 4x more than standard products without lasting longer, or requires absurd lifestyle gymnastics, we will rate it poorly or declare it a SKIP IT.
Often, the best plastic-free swap is something you already own in your kitchen (like an upside-down dinner plate over a bowl instead of plastic wrap).
The 4 Evaluation Metrics
1. Plastic Reduction (1–10)
Does this actually eliminate persistent petrochemical plastics, or does it merely swap one disposable material for another? We prioritize permanent swaps over single-use compostables.
2. Durability & Lifespan (1–10)
Will this item survive years of drops, dishwashers, and real family abuse? A stainless steel water bottle scores a 10 because it is practically indestructible.
3. Price & Financial Payoff (1–10)
10 = very cheap or saves you massive money over time. 1 = exorbitantly expensive. A safety razor scores a 9 because 10-cent blades save $150+ every year.
4. Convenience (1–10)
How easy is this to fit into a normal, busy morning? If a swap takes 15 minutes of fussy cleaning or special handling, convenience drops.
